About this picture: Jacmel, a beautiful city on the southern coast of Haiti, known for its artists, its pastel colonial houses and its carnival, had been hit hard by the earthquake and left with almost no functioning medical care. But hope remained.
Residents here were still pulling out a few people from under buildings -- alive.
The north of the country was untouched, as was its far south-west.
The town of Mirogane about 120 miles west of Port-au-Prince was badly hit, as was the southern coastal town of Jacmel.
But the port of St. Marc just 70 miles north of Port-au-Prince was largely spared.
